November 11, 2022, Karen Camper made her formal announcement for her run in the race to become Memphis’s first woman Mayor. After weeks of speculation, she threw her hat in the race. No fewer than six candidates have made formal announcement and the candidacy field is predicted to grow by leaps and bounds.
What makes the Mayor’s office so attractive to so many African-Americans candidates? For decades, most races for Mayor of Memphis included those who are absolutely unknown to the giant figures of our city. For decades, the speculation that many are entering the race solely to divide electoral in so many pieces until a “white” candidate could walk right in without a fight. Whether it’s true or not, it works out that way every election.
Karen Camper (State Government) and Sheriff Bonner (Shelby County Government) are two heavyweights who are getting into Memphis politics and another question arises, why? Camper has been a State legislator for over 1.5 decades, of her 331 legislative submitted bills, 171 (51%) are of Memorial nature. Of her 145 bills that passed the House, 127 (81%) were of Memorial nature. Of her 145 bills that passed the House, only 18 were of governance nature.

Karen Camper has run in 8 (16 years) races for public office, winning 8 of them. The candidate has raised a total of $387,031. She’s in bed with the finance, insurance, and real estate industry to the tone of $73,850 (aggregate). What did this money buy for Memphians? Our quality of life hasn’t improved at all.

State Representative Barbara Cooper (R.I.P.) supported Judge Joe Brown for Mayor of Memphis (2023) and was a member of his Committee for Mayor of Memphis. She directed this committee into a successful organization. Her input was vital and necessary. For near two years she took part in the organization’s Zoom meetings and was never silent.

State Representative Karen Camper is publicly stating that State Representative Barbara Cooper (R.I.P.) was supporting her, untrue. Memphis is now in desperate need of a moral leader, its crime is among the highest in the nation, and our children is in need of a heroic figure, not someone who creates false narratives, make claims that are untrue, and taking money from anyone, any corporation, and (uncoded) organizations and individuals.
